Glass Onion - Review *Spoilers

Glass Onion is a true modern “who dunnit?” with wacky characters from all corners of the spherical earth, if that’s what we’re to believe. We’ve got a impossibly accented Daniel Craig, an Elon Musk Hulk in Edward Nortan, a problematic sweatshop owner in Kate Hudsen, a set of Janelle Monets, a meninist icon in Dave Bautista, a mom turned aspiring politician in Kathryn Hahn and a nothing scientist Leslie Odom Jr. These characters push the 5% mystery, 95% explanation film to a level of enjoyment only a puppy doing something a bit silly can provide otherwise.

We’re thrust into the world of the pandemic where thankfully murder mysteries haven’t died off by not wearing a mask. Benoit plays Among Us in a bath with Angela Lansbury, Stephen Sondheim, Natasha Lyonne and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar while the rest of our characters receive a puzzle box from Miles. They all hop on a call and let Duke’s mum solve it all from the corner of the kitchen. This leads them to an invite to solve Miles’ murder on his private island, to celebrate his birthday. Cassandra / Helen has no time for puzzles and absolutely smashes the box to pieces, before delicately reading her invitation.

All parties arrive at the dock to head to the private island after a nice and unexplained spray with anti Covid vapor. They arrive at the island, mingle and chat before lounging by the pool. The festivities of the weekend begin that evening at dinner when Benoit ruins the weekend within 2 minutes by solving the entire murder mystery. At this point, Duke dies of pineapple poison, as he is allergic. Then Helen / Cassandra gets shot in the journal. The events of the film are then retold through an expository lens. Here we go!

Cassandra died, Helen wants to know why, so invites Benoit to the weekend to solve the crime, disguising it as an added layer to the murder mystery element of the extravagant party. Helen also dresses up as Cassandra, who they all call Andy. Andy sent them all an email with a cute little selfie of her holding a red envelope with an OG plan for the business that has made Miles island owning rich. She sends it around to everyone but Miles, who only faxes things. At this point of the explanation, we’re pretty sure Miles killed Andy, he did. He also killed Duke, Duke saw that she died on social media and he pineappled him to death from the inside out.

That’s it, the whole story, stretched out over two and a half hours of well written jokes and interesting exchanges. It’s not really a solvable mystery as we would have to know that Helen existed in any way but I’m not one to solve mysteries anyway so I reveled in the revelations and reveals. I think this is a worthy half a billion investment for Netflix and I am delighted that Daniel Craig can continue his Foghorn Leghorn impression for at least one more film.
